Chuck Corroto was known by many in the Mahoning Valley and he was a friend to all. Born and raised in Youngstown, Chuck was well liked because he was a caring, compassionate, and down-to-earth man who believed that with hard work and integrity any goal could be reached. He was an active member of the community, coached little league baseball teams, organized bocce tournaments and golf outings, and enjoyed a lengthy term as a member of the Mahoning County Planning Commission.
Chuck worked for The Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation/Simon Property Group for more than 31 years as the manager of the civil engineering department. His ability to engineer a project site was legendary, having personally been involved in the engineering and site design of more than 30 shopping malls nationwide.
In 1997 Chuck was diagnosed with cancer. He fought a brave battle with cancer and continued to work until just a few days before his death on August 13, 1998.
Family members and friends were honored and privileged to have been a part of his exemplary life, so they set a goal to honor him in a special way: they established a memorial fund to raise money for scholarships that bear his name.
Since 1999, The Chuck Corroto Memorial Golf Outing has raised enough money to award $21,000 in scholarships to Mahoning Valley students.
Chuck Corroto wanted to make a difference in peoples' lives, so scholarships for students seeking higher education and opportunity is a suitable tribute. The Chuck Corroto Memorial Scholarship fund awards scholarships to:
One graduating Senior of Poland Seminary High School who intends to major in engineering in college;
One graduating Senior of Poland Seminary High School who is a qualifying member of the Poland Seminary High School Golf Team;
One graduating Senior from any local high school who is a member of Holy Rosary Church in Lowellville, Ohio.
